Tips for Coping with Summer Depression

While summer is often associated with fun and relaxation, some people experience summer depression, also known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD) in warmer months. If you are feeling down during summer, here are some ways to manage your mood:

1. Get help. It is simple - if you feel signs of depression, no matter the season, seek support.

2. Plan. Consider the specific challenges you face during the summer and take necessary steps to help you feel more in control as summer approaches.

3. Sleep. Vacations, summer barbecues, and shorter nights can tempt you to stay up later than usual so make a concerted effort to have a consistent bedtime and ensure you are getting enough rest.

4. Exercise. Find ways to stay active early in the morning or late in the evening when it is not so hot.

5. Do not overeat. Unrealistic restrictions are hard to maintain and can lead to feelings of failure; focus instead on balanced eating.

6. Set boundaries. Consider passing the obligations of hosting family gatherings to avoid unnecessary stress.

7. Reflect. Recognizing and understanding the underlying causes of sadness during summer can help you break the cycle.

8. Take a mindful vacation. Ask yourself if a trip that could strain you financially is something you really want or a relaxing staycation at home is better.

9. Be kind to yourself. Try to avoid the mindset of feeling out of sync with everyone else and instead of comparing yourself to others or feeling pressured to be happy just because it is summer, focus on identifying what is triggering your depression and find ways to manage it.
